Why Allergy Sufferers Should Avoid Wet Carpet Cleaning Methods

Most carpet cleaning companies use a wet carpet cleaning method commonly known as steam cleaning.  However, this type of cleaning is not really steam cleaning at all.  Technically, it's only hot water extraction, and a wand is used to extract the water and detergent from the carpet.  There are however, some problems associated with this method, especially if you have allergies.

PROBLEMS WITH WET CARPET CLEANING

If you are allergic to mold or dust mites, you probably already know you should keep the humidity level in your home below 50% to avoid the growth of unwanted organisms.  Mold and dust mites thrive in damp environments, and steam cleaning is known to leave the carpet wet, sometimes for hours, even days.  Mold spores can actually germinate after only 12 hours in hospitable conditions, and a colony may form in as little as a day.

Wet methods usually leave the padding wet as well.  It takes even longer to dry because it can't get proper air circulation, which provides ideal conditions for mold and mildew growth.

Along with allergies, there are other disadvantages to wet carpet cleaning methods as well.  These methods usually have very long drying times.  This can be a big inconvenience to homeowners, as well as businesses.  You must wait for extended amounts of time to walk on the carpet, or put the furniture back in place.  If replaced prematurely, it could leave permanent dye or rust stains on your carpeting.  You should always make sure tabs or blocks are placed under furniture legs when carpet is wet after cleaning, in order to protect your carpet & furniture.  Wet cleaning can also cause damage to the floor beneath the padding, especially if it's wood.

Steam cleaning methods also leave behind a shampoo residue, if not rinsed properly.  This residue leaves the carpet sticky, attracting more dirt to the carpet after cleaning.  This is why you see traffic areas getting dirty quickly, causing you to clean more often than needed. Have you ever heard the saying "Once you get your carpets cleaned the first time, that they get dirty more often?"  This is a perfect example...
